KPA to use double-stack trains to improve cargo transit

By Felix Achanda

In a bid to enhance transportation of cargo from the Mombasa Port to the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Nairobi, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) will rely on double-stack trains launched by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) on Sunday.

If the move delivers positive results, more trains will be added to the scheme.

“If the take-off of containers at the ICD improves, we will launch more,” said Kenya Railways (KR) Commercial Manager Mr. Julius Siele.

Mr. Siele added the move is projected to double the capacity of cargo moved from the Mombasa Port to the ICD in Nairobi.
